The Demetrius Doctor Quartet
Demetrius Doctor, 24, grew up navigating the treacherous terrain of the Liberty Hill neighborhood of North Charleston where history and pride are intertwined with poverty and crime.
“The inner city life really shaped me to know what I wanted and didn’t want to do,” he said.
What he wanted to do was play music, and his lifelong experience in the church provided the framework and inspiration. Doctor attended the Charleston County School of the Arts starting in sixth grade, then spent a year at Belmont University before transferring to the College of Charleston where he fell in with a talented group of jazz students.
Suddenly he was being challenged to think about music in a new way. Church riffs and gospel styles formed the foundation of his musical sensibilities, but jazz was stretching him, challenging his instincts and demanding discipline.
Doctor soon demonstrated the growing range of his talent. Even while still in school he was beginning to play professional gigs. Today, he is considered one of the young hot shots on the scene.
